Moto Hagio, Japan, and more

Here’s a treat to start the weekend: Manga scholar and translator Matt Thorn has put his entire 2005 interview with Moto Hagio on his website. The interview first appeared in the shoujo manga issue of The Comics Journal, which is still available and well worth checking out in its entirety.

It’s official, because ICv2 says so: This week marks the first time a non-Japanese manga has been the best-selling graphic novel in the country. The global manga in question is Warriors, which is adapted from an already wildly popular set of YA novels, and which reached number 74 on the USA Today bestseller list this week.

Shaenon Garrity picks a good one for this week’s Overlooked Manga Festival: Japan as Viewed by 17 Creators.

Reviews: At the MangaCast, Mangamaniac Julie reviews vol. 1 of Beet the Vandel Buster. Katherine Dacey-Tsuei gives a rare F to the manga adaptations of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet at PopCultureShock. Erin F’s Manga Recon covers a whole slew of titles, including Reborn, Yubisaki Milk Tea, and Yoki, Koto, Kiku. David Welsh enjoys vol. 2 of Flower of Life. Erica Friedman checks out some yuri doujinshi, Souer Sengen, Yellow. At Manganews, Floating Sakura reviews vol. 3 of Old Boy and vol. 1 of Princess Princess, and Ishaan reviews vols. 2-6 of Dark Edge. At Prospero’s Manga, Miranda brings us up to date on vols. 2 and 3 of Old Boy and Ferdinand checks out a new Tokyopop title, vol. 1 of Rhysmyth. On the French blog du9, Xavier Guilbert translates his review of Hideo Azuma’s Shisso Nikki into English.

Thank you for posting the link to the Moto Hagio article. After reading it, I think I’m going to purchase issue #269 of TCJ!

David Welsh enjoys vol. 2 of Flower of Life, one of the titles Erin was less enthusiastic about.

I gave it an A-! I am really quite enthusiastic about Flower of Life, but it didn’t past “the boyfriend test” so to speak.

  4. Brigid says:

Sorry, Erin. I don’t know why I wrote that. Not enough coffee, maybe. :)

    I’ll take out that line.

Hi. I just finished translating and uploading another online Moto Hagio interview onto a new blog I’ve created that features translations of her groundbreaking Poe no Ichizoku. The blog also includes commentary and translations of a few other interviews she’s done, so please stop by.
