Reactions to the latest news about the Christopher Handley case from ANN, Gia at AnimeVice and Simon Jones at Icarus Comics. Simon and Gia catch something that went right by me: The author of the ComiPress piece, Lawrence Stanley, is a former lawyer for NAMBLA. This makes me not like him very much, but it doesn’t negate the facts presented in the article. What is happening to Handley is wrong.

I don’t know where the “convicted child pornographer” part comes from, but anyone who is a lawyer for NAMBLA, KKK, or someone whose nickname is based on a juicy morning beverage, and *WINS*, is a damn fine lawyer.
Simon, I’m pretty sure I saw that when I was Googling him yesterday, but I’m pulling it out for now as I don’t want to be wrong about it. At the very least, this guy has had some serious accusations made against him.
But you’re right, whatever else we may say about him, he does seem to know his stuff.
Lawyers are lawyers, and whether or not he defended NAMBLA and whether or not he has met charges of his own do not matter at the moment. To try and lambaste Lawrence Stanley and at the same time defend Christopher Handley feels a little hypocritical. I am not saying anyone is doing that outright, but as manga fans WE understand Handley’s situation and how outrageous it is. Let’s not turn around and start pointing fingers at one of his defenders in a different situation we may not understand. If different information comes out, then great, but let’s all look at the big picture of keeping Chris Handley (and ourselves) free to read what we want to.
