One Piece catches up; Tatsumi is everywhere

Big news for One Piece fans: Viz will start running the latest chapters of the manga in Shonen Jump starting in the fall. (Funimation will also start streaming the anime within one hour of its Japanese release.) At Manga Xanadu, Lori Henderson wonders how Viz will compensate for the huge gap in releases (One Piece is up to vol. 20 here and vol. 53 in Japan.)

The news hook this blog post by Yidi Yu is that the Viz original manga program isn’t dead; editor Eric Searleman came to Editors Day at the Savannah College of Art and Design to answer questions for aspiring artists, along with several of his counterparts from other publishers. Searleman said that Viz is looking for good stories, not just a particular style of art, but Yu is a bit skeptical as to whether that would work. Click through, because it’s a really interesting post.

Charles Brownstein of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund comments on recent stories about the case and argues that the statute under which Handley is being charged is unconstitutional and should be overturned in court.

Deb also talked to Christopher Butcher, manager of the Toronto comics shop The Beguiling, blogger at Comics212, and one of the moving forces behind TCAF.

Yamila Abraham of Yaoi Press reports that Happy Yaoi Yum Yum is running a bit late, but she’s happy to see that it will continue to be distributed to comics shops.

Issue 2 of Street Fighter Magazine is available for download, and it contains articles on all things Street Fighter (games, anime, manga) as well as an interview with Udon’s Matt Moylan.

I’ll read any good story with any art so long as the art isnt distracting (hard to read or understand whats going on in the panels). I generally dont like color unless its simple or painterly, no so saturated.

  2. Kiri says:

Correction: Mr. Searleman came to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), not SVA (School of Visual Arts), though I’m sure the administration here would be halfway flattered at the confusion, hahaha.

    Fixed it! Thanks, Kiri!
